I really enjoyed the food here. We ordered fried fish, joloff rice, and the lamb with plantains. Everything was delicious and was excited that they gave a good portion of plantains and rice. My biggest feedback is that the lamb portion is too small. Would also suggest they offer hot sauce, pepper options. For context, I ordered through uber eats.

This is my second time trying Safari and I loved it! The food is delicious. The lamb spelled and tasted roasted, well seasoned. The jollof rice had the perfect amount of spice. The plantains weren't overripe or too greasy. The goat pepper soup had depths of flavor. It looks like a plain broth but, as a Jamaican, I'll be back for more. The service is quick and friendly. ambiance wise, it's more of a takeout restaurant with limited high chairs.

The fufu & egusi was delicious. The jollof rice was difficult o stop eating it was so good. The lamb was good and had good flavor, but was a bit tough. Overall the food was great though. The side sauce you get is real spicy. Inside is cute and small. I ordered takeout.

This is the best African(West African) food in the Boston area. My fav is the attieke with Lamb or Fish. Also, the chicken Yassa is to died for.

This place is small (4 tables) and takes quite awhile for the food to arrive, but brings in a lot of kick and value. I really enjoyed the jollof rice with lamb ($16) and my friend got the jollof rice with fried fish (decently sized whole fish for $15). The jollof rice included plantains (a little soggy) and a really nice salsa. I would definitely come back to try the fish, and would try ordering ahead, as the wait time was quite awhile.

Man this place is delicious and a deal to boot! I got the groundnut stew (peanut) ($13) and my wife the jollof rice with lamb ($16). Both lasted us 2+ meals and were super tasty! The jollof rice was rich and salty and fatty, and the lamb was seriously to die for, fresh fried and spicy as hell. The friend plantains and salsa added great sweetness and acidity. The stew was yummy too, decent compared what I remember from West Africa. Service is brusque but kind. Order ahead since they fresh cook things and it can take some time to wait there.

Tried this place as we were craving african food in Boston. Overall the value is great. The food was ready in time (big plus if you are familiar with west African restaurants), large portions and the sweet plantains were very good. We ordered 4 different meals and they were solid, just not the best ever (some items didn't feel as fresh) so probably reheated which is common in African restaurant. Translation: a solid 4 is like a 5 in most restaurants lol

Safari African Restaurant

Safari African Restaurant in Mattapan is where authentic East African flavor comes alive. Located at 1336 Blue Hill Ave, this cozy spot blends traditional recipes with a warm, homestyle vibe that keeps locals coming back.

Discover rich African cuisine right in the heart of Mattapan

Safari African Restaurant is more than just a dining experience — it’s a cultural journey. Nestled on Blue Hill Ave, this local gem offers bold East African dishes crafted with time-honored techniques and authentic ingredients. Whether you’re new to African food or grew up on sambusas, chapati, or goat stew, Safari makes you feel right at home.

A visit during lunch hours shows the restaurant bustling with families and solo diners alike. The servers are welcoming and knowledgeable, eager to guide you through the menu if you’re unsure what to try first. The ambiance combines subtle Afrocentric decor with comforting aromas from the kitchen — think sizzling spiced meats, fragrant rice, and slow-cooked sauces that tell stories of home-cooked meals.

What sets Safari apart is its dedication to preserving the culinary integrity of each dish. You won’t find watered-down versions here. Every bite carries the boldness and warmth of generations-old recipes. Their beef suqaar, delicately sautéed with onions, garlic, and spices, is a crowd favorite, while the ugali with collard greens offers a taste of East Africa’s staple comfort food.

Traditional flavors served with care at Safari African Restaurant

Every dish at Safari African Restaurant tells a story. From the first crunch of a handmade sambusa to the last spoon of coconut-infused rice, there’s intentionality in every detail. Behind the counter, chefs with years of experience prepare meals with an eye for authenticity and balance. The kitchen relies on fresh herbs, imported spices, and time-honored cooking methods like slow-stewing, grilling over open flames, and hand-kneading dough for chapati.

During our visit, the goat stew stood out — tender, perfectly seasoned, and deeply flavorful, paired beautifully with rice pilaf and plantains. This is food that brings people together. In fact, you’ll often find local elders sharing stories over tea and friends gathering for weekend dinners, making it a cornerstone for the community.

Beyond the main dishes, Safari’s house-made juices deserve a mention. Try the fresh mango juice or the hibiscus drink for a refreshingly tangy contrast to the savory mains. Their attention to ingredient quality shines through not only in taste but in presentation and consistency.

A menu rooted in heritage and hospitality

One of the best parts about dining at Safari is exploring its diverse menu, which pays homage to several African regions while staying true to East African roots. Highlights include:

  • Chicken stew rich with turmeric and cardamom

  • Soft, golden injera for scooping up spicy lentils

  • Lightly fried tilapia with lime and herbs

There are also plenty of vegetarian options that don’t feel like an afterthought. The mixed vegetable curry and red lentil stew are not only filling but packed with texture and flavor.

Reviews from local diners often mention how the food reminds them of home — or introduces them to a new favorite dish. One guest shared, “I haven’t had goat cooked like this since I left Kenya. It’s the real deal.” The staff’s enthusiasm for their food is contagious, and you’ll leave not only full but also a little more connected to African culture.

Community-driven service and a location that feels like home

Safari African Restaurant’s location in Mattapan makes it easily accessible for both locals and visitors exploring Boston. The restaurant’s interior is modest but welcoming, with colorful patterns and traditional music adding charm to the experience. Parking is convenient, and walk-ins are always greeted with a smile.

What stands out most is the strong sense of community. Safari isn’t just about food — it’s about people. Whether you’re attending one of their occasional cultural nights or simply grabbing dinner with friends, you’ll find that the space invites conversation and connection.

The restaurant has also built a loyal customer base through word-of-mouth reviews. Many note the consistency of flavor, the generous portions, and the heartfelt service. It’s the kind of place where your name gets remembered and your order might come with a friendly recommendation.

In a city filled with diverse food options, Safari African Restaurant offers something special: a genuine, flavorful experience served with pride. From the moment you walk in, the aromas, the smiles, and the rich spices make it clear — this isn’t just a restaurant. It’s a little piece of Africa, right here on Blue Hill Ave.
